Key takeaways
- Start as a reseller on someone else's servers if you want customers first, and move to your own servers once support and billing run smoothly.
- The panel licence is a cost per customer if it is priced per account, so work out your margin at 10, 100 and 500 accounts before you choose.
- As of 30 October 2026 WHMCS self hosted starts at $34.95 per month for up to 250 active clients, excluding tax.
- Support and abuse handling cost more time than servers do, so write the policies and answer times before you sell the first plan.
A hosting business is a servers business, a software business and a support business at the same time. The money is in the third one.
Reseller or your own servers
Reseller hosting means you rent an allowance on a provider's server and sell slices under your brand. The provider runs the hardware and usually the panel. You start fast and cheap, but your margin is small and you cannot change the stack.
Your own servers (a VPS, a dedicated server or a cloud server) give you the margin and control, plus the work: security, updates, backups, mail reputation and nights on call. Server prices are public: as of 30 October 2026 Hetzner lists its shared cloud plans from about EUR 5.99 per month excluding VAT (Hetzner Cloud), with larger and dedicated plans higher. Read the plan page for the exact specification and availability.
A sensible path is reseller first, then one server of your own when you have about twenty paying customers and know what they ask for. If you take that step, read how to host many websites on one server and harden a Linux hosting server.
The licence maths
The panel is usually the biggest recurring cost after the servers. How it is priced decides your margin:
- cPanel lists tiers by account count, from a one-account plan up to 100 accounts and beyond. As of 30 October 2026 its Pro tier (up to 30 accounts) is $53.99 per month and Premier (up to 100 accounts) is $69.99, excluding VAT (cPanel pricing).
- DirectAdmin lists $15 per month for 10 accounts and $29 per month for unlimited accounts as of 30 October 2026 (DirectAdmin pricing). It does not allow reselling a licence unless you lease it with a server.
- Free and flat priced panels exist too. Flat per server pricing keeps the licence from growing with the customers, and our free panel guide lists the open options.
Do the sum for 10, 100 and 500 accounts: licence per account divided into the price of your plan. If the licence takes a third of a small plan at 500 accounts, change the panel or the plan before you launch, not after. Prices change, so open each vendor page on the day you decide. RespireCloud is priced flat per server and has a free plan, and our partners page explains the reseller options.
Billing and automation
A billing tool sends invoices, takes payments, suspends unpaid accounts and creates hosting accounts through the panel. WHMCS is the best known. As of 30 October 2026 its self hosted plans run $34.95 per month for up to 250 active clients, $54.95 for up to 500 and $84.95 for up to 1,000, excluding tax, with a managed cloud version from $9.99 per month for up to 25 clients (WHMCS pricing). If your panel has its own client and reseller features, you may not need one at the start. Whatever you choose, test the full path with a test order before you take real money: order, payment, account creation, welcome email, renewal and cancellation.
Price your plans
- Count your cost per account: server share, licence, backups, support time.
- Sell by what customers understand (sites, storage, mailboxes), not by raw CPU numbers.
- Keep three plans, with a free trial or a money back period, and one clearly cheaper than the competition's entry plan.
- Do not sell unlimited. Say what the limits are, and enforce them kindly.
Support and abuse
Decide before launch how fast you answer (a day is honest for a small host), what you support (your platform, not every plugin) and what you refuse (phishing, spam, illegal content). Set outbound mail limits per account, scan for malware, and write an acceptable use policy that lets you suspend an account fast. Keep a status page and tell customers about planned work.
Your first ten customers
They come from people you know: local businesses, friends with a blog, agencies that need a reliable host. Offer to move their site for free, and do it well, because migration is the moment of highest trust. Our guide on moving from cPanel without downtime shows what to check. Ask each one for a review after three months, and fix every problem they report.
Which one should you pick
- No servers, little money: reseller hosting with a provider's panel.
- Some Linux skill and a small client list: one VPS, a free or flat priced panel, invoices from a simple billing tool.
- Dozens of customers: your own servers, a billing and automation tool, and a written support process.
Questions
How much money do I need to start?
A reseller account or one small VPS, a domain, a panel (possibly free) and a billing tool can cost under a hundred dollars a month. Your main cost is time for support, and the first customers usually come from people you know.
Do I need WHMCS?
No. It is the best known billing and automation tool for hosts, but you can start with invoices from a general billing tool and add automation when you have enough customers to need it.
Reseller hosting or my own servers?
A reseller plan is easier and cheaper to start, but you depend on the provider and have less control. Your own servers give you margin and control, and also the job of running them.
What about abuse and spam?
Write an acceptable use policy, set outbound mail limits, and respond to abuse reports within a day. A single spamming customer can get a whole server's IP blocked.
