Key takeaways

  • HestiaCP is GPLv3 and fully free. aaPanel has a free edition and a paid Pro, and its public repository carries no standard open source licence.
  • aaPanel is the easier start for beginners, with a large app and extension store, a WordPress toolkit and Docker management. HestiaCP is leaner and runs its own mail and DNS.
  • Several aaPanel features that hosts want, such as team members, protection tools and analytics, sit in Pro, which costs $198 a year or $699 for life as of 30 October 2026.
  • Both panels have a public record of security fixes. Whichever you choose, keep it updated and keep its login off the open internet.

aaPanel and HestiaCP both promise a free control panel for a Linux VPS, and both are popular with people who want to stop editing nginx files by hand. They differ in who builds them, how free they are, and how much they include. This comparison uses each project's own pages, opened on 30 October 2026.

Licence and source

HestiaCP is released under the GPLv3, built by volunteers and funded by donations. Anyone can read, fork and redistribute it within the GPL.

aaPanel describes itself as an open source solution, with a free edition "for life" and a paid Pro. Its code is on GitHub, but GitHub does not detect a standard licence there, so it is worth reading the terms before you rely on forking or redistributing it. For running your own sites, both are free to use.

The app store and the beginner path

aaPanel is built for a quick start. The free edition manages websites, databases, FTP, Docker, files and scheduled tasks, includes a WordPress toolkit and lists over 100 apps and extensions. The interface suits someone who has never configured nginx. The download page recommends a clean Ubuntu 22.04 or similar and lists support up to Ubuntu 26.04 and Debian 13.

HestiaCP is simpler and smaller. Creating a user, a domain and a certificate is a short form, and one click installers cover common apps. There is no extension store, so you add anything beyond that from the command line. That is easier to reason about and slower for newcomers who want a marketplace.

Mail and DNS

HestiaCP treats mail and DNS as part of the product: Exim, Dovecot, Roundcube, per domain certificates, optional spam and virus scanning, your own nameservers and DNSSEC. If the server must be your mail host, this is the stronger fit, but running mail still needs care, as covered in setting up a mail server the right way.

aaPanel lists mail server management in its free edition. I could not confirm a built in DNS server on its pages, so plan on external DNS unless you test it.

Trust and the update model

Both panels run as root on your server, so how they are built and updated matters. A search of the NVD database on 30 October 2026 returned 19 entries for aaPanel, including several for versions 7.57 and 8.25, and 21 for HestiaCP, including one fixed in 1.10.5. Keyword searches count loosely, so this is a pointer, not a score. aaPanel also has a security advisories page.

One concrete habit to check: aaPanel's download page shows install commands that fetch the script from an http:// address. If you want to be careful, download it over HTTPS if the host allows it, read it, then run it. Whichever panel you choose, restrict its login port by IP or VPN and follow the hosting panel security checklist.

Multiple users and Pro

For one owner running a few sites, both are fine. For several clients, HestiaCP has users, packages and resource limits in the free product. aaPanel's pricing page puts unlimited team members, advanced protection, analytics and priority support in Pro: $28.80 a month, $198 a year or $699 lifetime as of 30 October 2026. That is reasonable if you use those parts and a poor deal if you wanted them free.

Which one should you pick

  • First server, WordPress, want a store of apps: aaPanel.
  • You need Docker management in the panel: aaPanel.
  • You must run mail and DNS yourself: HestiaCP.
  • You want a plain GPL project with no paid tier: HestiaCP.
  • You host a few clients with limits: HestiaCP.
  • You have a 512 MB VPS: aaPanel's minimum is lower, but test it under load.

What neither does

Neither manages a fleet of servers, handles billing, load balances or backs your SLA. They are single server tools. If you expect to grow, see how RespireCloud prices a flat per server panel with a free plan, and read free control panels for a VPS and HestiaCP compared for more options.

Questions

Is aaPanel really free?

The free edition costs nothing and has no site limit. Pro adds protection, analytics, team members and priority support. As of 30 October 2026 Pro is $28.80 a month, $198 a year or $699 once, according to aaPanel's pricing page.

Is aaPanel open source?

It calls itself an open source solution and its code is on GitHub, but GitHub detects no standard licence there. Check its terms if you need to fork or redistribute it.

Which is better for WordPress?

aaPanel includes a WordPress toolkit for setup, backup, cloning and security in the free edition, with more in Pro. HestiaCP installs WordPress with a one click installer and relies on you for the rest.

Which is safer to run?

Neither is safe by default. Update promptly, restrict the panel port by IP or VPN and use two factor login. Read each project's advisories before you choose.

Can I run mail on aaPanel?

Its free edition lists mail server management. HestiaCP ships Exim, Dovecot and Roundcube as part of its normal install, so mail is a core part rather than an extra.
