Key takeaways
- As of 30 October 2026 DirectAdmin Standard is a flat $29 a month per server for unlimited accounts, while Enhance bills per website from $0.15 a month.
- On one server, DirectAdmin is cheaper once you pass about 190 websites; below that, Enhance's per website price is lower, ignoring its $10 minimum.
- Enhance isolates each website in a container; DirectAdmin supports more distributions and arm64, while Enhance supports Ubuntu 24.04 on x86_64 only.
- The two models trade predictability against pay as you grow, so count your websites and servers before choosing.
Enhance and DirectAdmin are both common answers to the question of what to run instead of cPanel. They price in opposite ways, which makes the choice a sum rather than a feeling. All figures below come from the vendors' own pages, read on 30 October 2026, and exclude VAT.
The cost model at three sizes
DirectAdmin's pricing page lists Personal PLUS at $5 a month (2 accounts), Lite at $15 (10 accounts) and Standard at $29 (unlimited accounts), billed monthly per server. Enhance's pricing page bills $0.15 per website a month up to 5,000, $0.10 from 5,001 and $0.075 from 25,001. Servers are not billed by Enhance, and add-on domains and subdomains are not counted.
| Websites | Enhance | DirectAdmin Standard, one server | DirectAdmin Standard, servers needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | $7.50 | $29 | 1 |
| 500 | $75 | $29 | 1 |
| 5,000 | $750 | $29 per server | depends on your hardware |
These are our calculations from the listed prices, assuming one website per account. At 5,000 sites a single server is unrealistic, so DirectAdmin's cost is $29 times however many servers you run, subject to the bulk discounts on the page (15 percent after four Standard licences, up to 40 percent at thirty five). Enhance's 5,000 sites cost the same whether you run 5 or 50 servers. Enhance's footnote also mentions a $10 minimum billing threshold, which affects the 50 site row.
The break even is simple: $29 divided by $0.15 is about 193 websites on one server.
Architecture and isolation
Enhance runs each website as an isolated, containerised environment with its own system user, home directory and optional hard resource limits. Its installer asks for a blank virtual machine or bare metal with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on x86_64, 2 GB of RAM, 2 cores and 20 GB of disk; ARM and LXD style containers are not supported. See the installation guide.
DirectAdmin runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS Stream, Rocky, AlmaLinux, Debian and Ubuntu, on x86_64 or arm64, with at least 4 GB of memory plus 4 GB of swap and two static IPv4 addresses if you want it to control DNS. See its requirements. We did not find per site container isolation on the pages we read.
Backups, API and billing integrations
Enhance lists incremental backups as included and has sections for backup, email, DNS, database and application server roles, plus WHMCS and billing sections in its docs. DirectAdmin's documentation lists an API, hook scripts and plugin development, and a backups section. We could not open detail pages for either vendor's WHMCS module, so check the module lists before you commit. This is the part to test on a trial if you automate provisioning.
Reseller features and migration
We did not verify reseller tier details for either vendor. Enhance's cPanel importer brings sites, mailboxes with passwords, databases except PostgreSQL, SSL certificates, FTP accounts and cron jobs from a full backup of cPanel 102 LTS, 104, 106 or 108, and leaves out catch all addresses, autoresponders and Mailman. Read the importer page. Whichever panel you choose, restore one account first, as in moving from cPanel without downtime.
Which one should you pick
- Few websites per server, many servers: Enhance's per website price scales with sites, not servers.
- Many sites packed on each server, steady price wanted: DirectAdmin Standard is predictable; see flat per server pricing versus per account.
- You need AlmaLinux, Debian or ARM: DirectAdmin.
- Strong per site isolation is a selling point: Enhance.
- Starting out with a few sites: consider a free tier first; the free options are covered in free control panel for a VPS.
Where RespireCloud fits
RespireCloud also charges per server rather than per account, with a free edition for one account and paid editions listed on pricing. It is newer than both, with a smaller ecosystem, and white label and reseller features for hosts are described on the partners page. Its DirectAdmin comparison shows the same checks side by side.
Questions
Which is cheaper, Enhance or DirectAdmin?
It depends on the number of websites and servers. DirectAdmin Standard is $29 a month per server regardless of accounts, while Enhance is $0.15 per website, so the break even on one server is about 190 websites.
Does DirectAdmin charge per account?
Its lower plans cap accounts, at 2 for Personal PLUS and 10 for Lite, but Standard is unlimited at $29 a month. Prices read on 30 October 2026 are on the vendor's page.
Is Enhance free?
The pricing page lists no free tier. Its footnote mentions a minimum billing threshold of $10.
Which has better isolation?
Enhance documents containerised websites with their own user and optional hard resource limits. DirectAdmin's pages we read do not describe equivalent per site containers, so ask the vendor about the isolation you need.
Can either import from cPanel?
Enhance imports a full cPanel account backup, including mailboxes with passwords. DirectAdmin has its own migration tooling, which we did not test, so check its documentation for your cPanel version.
