Best free control panel for WordPress on a VPS

The best free control panels for WordPress on a VPS in 2026: HestiaCP, CloudPanel, aaPanel and others compared on caching, staging, backups and updates.

Key takeaways

  • For one WordPress server with mail included, HestiaCP is the most complete free panel. For WordPress sites without mail on the box, CloudPanel is the cleanest.
  • The free panels give you the web stack and caching switches, but staging and bulk updates are mostly something you add with a plugin, a script or a paid tier.
  • Check the WordPress tooling you need (backups, cloning, bulk updates) against the free edition, because some of it sits behind a paid tier.
  • Free is a good start for a few sites. Past that, the time you spend on updates and restores is the real cost, so plan for it.

WordPress is the usual reason people look for a panel on a VPS. You want PHP that is easy to switch, a certificate that renews itself, backups, and a way to keep several sites apart. This guide ranks the free choices for that job, as of 30 October 2026, using each project's own pages. It does not rank them on speed, because we did not benchmark them, and any panel's speed depends mostly on your caching setup and your plugins.

What WordPress needs from a panel

  • PHP versions per site, so an old plugin does not hold back the other sites.
  • A database and an easy way to back it up. WordPress lives in its database.
  • Page caching, at the web server or with a plugin, because uncached WordPress is slow.
  • Free, automatic certificates and HTTPS redirects.
  • Backups off the server, restorable by a person who is not you at 2 a.m.
  • Updates and cloning, either in the panel or in a WordPress tool the panel adds.

1. HestiaCP, the most complete for one server

HestiaCP installs Apache2 and nginx with PHP-FPM, multiple PHP versions (5.6 to 8.5 according to its README), a Bind DNS server, mail with anti-virus, anti-spam and webmail, MariaDB or PostgreSQL, Let's Encrypt with wildcard support and a firewall. It is GPL-3.0 and its latest stable release is 1.10.5, published 14 September 2026. The minimum in its docs is 1 core, 1 GB of RAM without SpamAssassin and ClamAV, and 10 GB of disk.

For WordPress, the web domain screen lets you choose a template. The docs describe a caching template with a proxy cache, and with nginx only you can tick Enable FastCGI Cache and set how long it is valid, with a Purge Nginx Cache button. It does not describe a WordPress installer or staging, so you install WordPress yourself or with a script, and you use a plugin or a copy of the folder and database for a staging site.

2. CloudPanel, the cleanest for PHP sites without mail

CloudPanel's technology stack page lists nginx 1.30 with HTTP/3, PHP 7.1 to 8.5, MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB, Varnish Cache 7.7 and Redis 8 on Ubuntu 26.04 and Debian 13. The requirements page asks for at least one core, 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of disk. The interface is simple, and it targets people who run sites on their own server. It does not list a mail server, so plan an outside mail host. The latest release on its public GitHub repository is v2.5.4 from 1 July 2026. We could not open its WordPress page (the address returned 404), so we do not describe its WordPress tooling here. Check its docs for the current state.

3. aaPanel, easy start, with a paid tier

aaPanel says its core version is free for life and lists WP Toolkit, which handles setup, backup, cloning, migration and restore, plus theme and plugin management. The page lists WP Toolkit under both the free and Pro features, so confirm which parts your edition has. Pro costs $399 lifetime on the page we saw, which was a sale. aaPanel's licence is its own "open source licence agreement", which GitHub does not recognise as a standard licence, so read it if licence terms matter to you. Its latest GitHub release is 7.65.0 from 22 January 2026.

4. Virtualmin, strong if you want a Pro tier later

Virtualmin's GPL edition covers web, mail and DNS. Its Professional edition adds WP Workbench, which can bulk update core, plugins and themes, schedule and restore backups, clone sites, search and replace in the database and open the WordPress dashboard without a password. Professional starts from $7.50 a month or $75 a year on the shop page. The GPL repository's latest release is 8.3.0 from 29 September 2026.

Caching and PHP tuning

Whatever the panel, the same tuning moves the needle for WordPress:

  1. Use PHP-FPM with a PHP version your plugins support, and keep it updated.
  2. Turn on page caching at the web server (FastCGI cache on nginx, or Varnish) or with a caching plugin, and bypass the cache for logged in users and the cart or checkout pages.
  3. Add an object cache (Redis) if the database is the slow part.
  4. Size the PHP-FPM workers to your RAM, so a traffic spike does not push the server into swap.

Staging and backups

Staging is the feature free panels cover least. A hand rolled version is a second subdomain, a copy of the files, an exported database and a search and replace of the address. Backups matter more: send them off the server, and do a restore test once. Our guide on keeping a free panel safe covers the checklist.

When to go paid

Pay when the time you spend on updates, restores and support costs more than a licence. That usually happens when you host sites for customers, need bulk updates across many sites, or want a vendor to call. The paid choices have different shapes. For example, Enhance bills per website, from $0.15 per website a month with a $10 minimum on its page, and it includes staging websites, incremental backups and a WordPress toolkit. cPanel plans start at $29.99 a month for one account on its page. These figures are from the vendors' pages on 30 October 2026, and they change.

Where RespireCloud fits

RespireCloud has a free plan of 1 account, 3 sites and 5 mailboxes on one server with the base product (web, mail, DNS, SSL and backups). It suits a person who wants one tool for hosting rather than a stack of separate ones. It is not a WordPress specialist tool. See hosting features and pricing, and compare it with the rest in the best hosting control panel in 2026.

Questions

What is the best free control panel for WordPress?

For a single server that also runs email, HestiaCP. For WordPress and other PHP sites on a server where mail lives elsewhere, CloudPanel. Both are free to use, and both need you to look after updates and backups.

Do free control panels include WordPress staging?

Rarely as a one click feature. aaPanel's WP Toolkit lists cloning and Virtualmin Professional has WP Workbench with cloning, but the HestiaCP and CloudPanel pages we read do not describe staging. You can clone a site by hand or with a plugin.

Do I need a control panel for WordPress at all?

No. A WordPress site runs fine on a hand built stack. A panel saves time on certificates, PHP versions, mail and backups, and helps most when you host more than one site.

Which free panel has the best caching?

HestiaCP can turn on nginx FastCGI cache with a purge button, and CloudPanel's stack lists Varnish and Redis. Which is better depends on your sites. Test with your own theme and plugins.
